hi I only have one and it states the parish they are coming from and going to, the date, head of households name, wifes name and all of their childrens names. Its a fantastic document, mine is dated 1726.

Yes I have a copy of one, and as said, good, My 5 x great grandparents were going from one village to the another, and it was so the new village could claim on the village they were coming from if they hit hard times.

Thank you for your replies They were disappointing! mentioned no names , just amounts of money the village had paid out. BUT I did find a 1811 census which listed my ancestors ANd an electoral role ( My lot couldn't vote but were listed as tenents of someone who could.....) So what with that AND a will agood day at the records office. Alice

Mad Alice I don't think you saw Settlement Orders then - they did not involve the payment of money. Settlement orders are individual documents which ALWAYS state the name of the adult, their spouse (if any) their children, where born and their ages, and then a statement from the person asking for settlement, and often a supporting reference from some local person who is willing to employ them/knows of their good character etc. I think you probably saw the Parish Poor Law Accounts, for outrelief in the parish. Mad Alice LOL! I know the feeling, it's like being a starving kid in a sweetshop! Hopefully, if you can get there again soon, your brain will settle down and let you do things in an orderly fashion. If you manage this, please explain to me how to do it - I still flit excitedly from this to that after 30 odd years! OC
