Ive just found my father and grandfather listed in the London Gazzette Archives, my question is, they all have a 7 digit number listed next to their name, would this be a military number or some sort of a reference number for the gazzette? Any ideas anyone? Nicky

Hi, thanks for the question - I hadn't appreciated that these are available to search. I've now searched for one of my ancestors in the 1750 to 1825 period. By 1825, the gazette issue numbers were in the tens of thousands, around 16,000 and even in the 1990s, the issue numbers are only at about the 50,000. However, there were 76 pages in the issue I looked at in the 1990s, so it might be possible that this is the issue plus page number - have you looked at the scanned page? This shows the issue and page number at the top. Alternatively, since they have indexed all the miliatry awards, might it be a ref number for the index? As you say, the other alternative is that it is the ref number when the award was granted by the military.

hi Ivy, thanks for your feedback, these numbers cant relate to page numbers as the numbers run concurrently, and there are hundreds of names on each page. The records I was looking at were WW2, officer cadet training units to become 2nd Lieutenants, and appointment of cadets, so I imagine it is a number given to them by the military {training school numbers?}. Like you I didnt realise these were searchable records till I read a thread on here about it last night, this is why Ive just renewed my GR membership, the info you pick up from these boards is invaluable especially the tips boards. they open so many doors for you, I personally feel its well worth £9.95 a year. I will check the images later, thanks again. Nicky
