hi, does anyone know where abouts in london the 'east london cemetry' is? i have a credit card size card for my grandfathers death/burial plot in this cemetry. sadly it does say much. it reads: 'in loving memory of walter william bland who died 20th day of december 1928 aged 61 years. interred at east london cemetry in grave no. 19031'

Hi Yummy, Just as an aside to your question....a great aunt of mine lived in the house just inside the gates of the cemetary and in fact left to get married from that address, she was always known as 'Cemetary Kate' after that. Kathlyn

I think I read that the cemetary now has flats/houses on it. Before they developed the site they put notices in the 'local' papers asking anyone who wanted to remove a headstone could do so. After the given time for response to this notice, the headstones would be removed and taken away if no replies were received. I understand the remains would be dug up and re-deposited elsewhere. East London Cemetery is still there. The one that closed was Tower Hamlets Cemetery knowm as Bow Cemetery. I think if you telephone the number given the superintendent will look up his records and give you what details he has re your ancestor. Irene

There is a massive cemetary near Manor Park / Wansted which is under East London if the other tips don't help. Can't remember the name of it - but will find out from work this weekend if it helps liz

The East London Cemetery in Plaistow is still very much in use for burials and cremations, and kept very tidy. I have 53 rellies that I know of buried there, and there are probably more, including my Nan, Granddad and Aunt. Plaistow used to come under the West Ham reg district, but now it's in the London Borough of Newham. The biggest one in that area, is the City of London Cemetery, which faces onto Wanstead Flats in Forest Gate. Also in Forest Gate is the West Ham Cemetery. A lot of people from the West Ham Workhouse were buried there (including some of my rellie's) There is another one called Manor Park Cemetery, which is in between Forset Gate and Manor Park. Sandra
