Has anybody come across any reference to running races which were held in Southsea around 1881. I am about to be given a copy of a photo, where about 60 costermongers, complete with hats, are preparing at the start line. They have their barrows and they are facing away from them, so that they are pushing the barrow, rather than pull it. It could be near Long Curtain, near the Garrison Church. There are large crowds, including ladies in carriages and Royal Marines

This sounds like it might be the people who traded in Charlotte Street. I know there was an open-air market there but I don't know if it went back to the 1880s. If you have permission to copy it, the local newspaper, The News would probably be interested in printing it on their nostalgia pages, which are very popular .A reader might offer some information. ...Or the library or museum staff in Portsmouth might be able to tell you more about the event. Thanks for the reply. They seem to be fish people from the Camber Docks. I haven't had any luck in finding them but will go and ask at the Record Office, if not I'll write to the papers. Thanks
