Well I didnt think it was possible but I think he may well be my great grandfather. All I knew about him (from my grandfathers birth certificate) was that he married Mary Morris and he was a railway carter. On freebmd there is only one marriage that fits the bill from 1895 - 1915. And a bonus the father is registered. Need to check out earlier census records now. Would be nice if there is a connection to the earliest post. Thanks for help! |

own account means they support themselves. Carm written over the top is probably the people collating the statistics. That would be the designated occupation for them to be listed under. The difference between porter & carter would be that carter had a horse & cart, porters usually didn't. In this case I'm not sure but obviously the family thought there was a difference or they wouldn't have recorded it like that. I wondered if the sons owned the cart, but it looks as if they may have worked for the father. I notice that the other Jones on the page is a traveller for furniture. Ozi. |

Oh yes, I can see the DO on Marks line. Thank you! Is that what the 'own account' means then, family business? Whats the difference between a carter and a porter? Still would like to know what the word is written over the top of it? |

He's a 'ditto' carter. His father is a furniture porter so he's a furniture carter. The 'ditto' has been written over the top 'Carm' possibly for carman. Margaret |
