I have found my great granddad Charles Thomas Lee in the 1901 Census living in Leicester with his wife Sarah Jane and son Charles, however I can’t find any records of him in the 1891 or 1881 Census. I have found a record of Charles and Sarah getting married in Q4 1896 and record of his Birth in Q1 1876 both in Leicester. My Granddad always said that his ancestors were Romany gypsies but I wasn’t sure how far back could this be why he does not appear in the census? Or am I just missing something?

Thanks June, but I was after any records from the 1891 or 1881 Census for Charles Thomas Lee. He seems to disappear from the census.

Darren, The 1901 details were posted just for reference so that we know it is the right family - which you now have confirmed. The marriage cert would be useful to give the name of the father. 1891 how do you know this is not the right one? This looks like it could be the record of his birth. It just seems strange that he appears to be born live and get married in Leicester but does not appear in the Census?

My great grandmother was a Romany, born c1894, but she isn't on the 1901.

Thanks Julie, I found this Charles in the 1881 Census living with his parents James and Ann Lee and traced it back to the same record as you in 1851. After my initial excitement I then worked back through the Census records for James and Ann Lee to find this Charles Lee still living with his parents in 1901 which is the same year I find my Charles Thomas Lee living with his wife Sarah. As I also found a second Charles Lee born in Leicester around 1876 I’m disappointed to say I don’t believe this to be the one. But thanks anyway for trying.
