Hi there, It took me so long to type that lot out that I nudged it then deleted incase it had gone half way down the page!! :-) I have tried looking for Emily under just initials but have been unable to find her. Obviously it's more difficult because often place of birth is not listed & I wouldn't know she would be. I might google to try & find out where the local TB sanatorium was for the Croydon area. Liz |

Hi Liz You probably know this, but sometimes people in institutions were noted just by their initials in the censuses. Angela |

Wow that was a quick nudge - which has now disappeared If she is ill then she might not be listed with her full name but just by initials Maureen |

My 3xGGM Emily Baker was born 5.12.1844 in Deeping St James, Lincs. Father William Baker, also from D St J. Mother Sarah Baker (nee Wakefield) from Grantham, Lincs. On 1.3.1868 Emily married James Durrant in Lambeth, Surrey. They had 3 children. William (possibly born out of wedlock) c1868, Mirriam c1869 & Hannah 1870. All born in Croydon. On 28.6.1870 James died in Croydon of TB. On the 1871 census William is living with Emily's father & stepmother. Mirriam & Hannah are nurse children fostered with a family in Croydon. Emily then went on to have a child with the given name Allen Taylor though no father named on the birth cert 18.9.1872 & on the 14.9.1876 a daughter with the given name Emily Wells (again no father on birth cert). This Emily is my 2xGGM. On 15.6.1878 she married Emilys father, James Wells & by the 1881 census the family seem to have been reunited, with Mirriam,Hannah & Allen living alongside Emily, James & their 3 children. I've been unable to find Emily Durrant nee Baker anywhere on the 1871 census. Obviously she had faced a great trauma in her life. Her husband had died very young when they had 3 very small children. The children are not living with her on the 1871 census - one with reletives the others fostered out. I've tried searching for Emily Baker, Durrant & even Taylor & Wells but can find nothing. I was thinking maybe she also had TB but surely if she was in a sanatorium she would still be on the census. Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I would love to know what had happened with Emily in 1871. Many thanks Liz |

I have a very good picture of my 3x great grandmothers life but have been unable to find her on the 1871 census. Typically it was a very significant time in her life. I'll give the details below. Any help would be much appreciated. Liz |
