I've got a James Robinson who died 6th Sept 1917 Portsmouth aged 64 yrs and have his death cert. He is listed as James Robinson, otherwise John Burke. I've looked up Ancestry for a death of a John Burke in the same qtr and there is one, same page, same age and same District. Has anybody come across this before because it has me stumped! Thanks

Not actually Two Death Certs: The two entries on the index are because he has an alias on his death certificate, not because his death was registered twice. If you ordered under the other name you would get a copy of the same certificate. I have had similar entries, because the person had used two different surnames (birth father's and stepfather's name). Yours is intriguing - wonder why the two totally different names?

Hi Judith. I have no idea why he used another totally different name. It sounds as if he had something to hide. Another mystery to add to the list. Thanks

That sounds an interesting cert. Who registered his death? They obviously knew of his double identity. Did he appear in the 1901 census under either or both names? I'm just wondering if he led a double life. Gwyn

I have one where there are seemingly two entries too One is for , lets say, John Jim Smith, the other John James Smith.
