By 1881 John Arshurs is married and living with Martha Devaux as lodger and a William Devaux aged 12. In 1891 John Arthurs is on his own but a widower as in 1901. All Shoreditch. If Mary died between 1881 and 1891 then I would think this is herJohn. |

Father may still have been deceased at time of marriage - it seems to be a choice as to whether bride says he's deceased or not. My mother did not put deceased against her father's name when she married and he had died when she was four years old! Jill |

I have found MARY ARTHUR living as a lodger in Deptford in 1871, she was born in Devon and is recorded as a 'hawker' and a widow. Her birth date is about right. I have found JOHN ARTHUR, living as a lodger in Shoreditch in 1871, he was born in Devon, and is recorded as a bootmaker, which he was, and is 'unmarried', his birth date is about right. Now--------in 1875 John Arthur`s daughter, Mary Jane marries and on the cert. her father is not listed as 'deceased', so I presume he was still alive at that time. I have tried many combinations using the Ancestry wild card to find the family together in 1871, but have had no luck. Are these two my Mary and John????? Should I dismiss this info as just being coincidental???? Thoughts very much welcome. Kathlyn |
