In which part of the country was he living? The description of the census enumeration district may list the names of any inns within the relevant district. Also, you could search the place name on the Historical Directories website and see if he is listed in any directories of the appropriate time. Pete |

You could try googling '1881 pubs'. You can search this site using name, town or address. I don't know how much of the country it covers - but hasn't got Winchester :o( maggie |

I did not know about that site Maggie, very useful! YM - the search under Thomas Bell on the site Maggie mentions brings up lots of matches, but when you add the word Inn Keeper it narrows it to one match in Newcastle - and if you put Innkeeper you get 6 more matches. My geography is terrible, where is Morpeth? Bar Close Scaleby BELL Thomas Innkeeper Bradbury Village Bradbury BELL Thomas Innkeeper Durham Ox Carlton Miniott BELL Thomas Labourer & Innkeeper New Inn Dalston BELL Thomas Innkeeper Unicorn Inn York St Maurice BELL Thomas Innkeeper White Lion Inn Brampton BELL Thomas Innkeeper Highlander Inn Ovington BELL Thomasd Inn Keeper |

i'll go back and try agin. maybe its one of those sites that gives mre results with less input info cos i put area, name age etc. he is listed as coal miner in 1881, and inn keeper i 1891 and 1901. i do believe it is newcastle way. |

Census return gives him as living in Newgate Street - If you google Northumberland communities and follow the links on that site, you will find 2 pictures of Newgate St Morpeth. Also try maps - there is a good one of Morpeth, showing Newgate St with its buildings plotted. Jay |

If you save the 1897 map and enlarge it, you will see there are several inns and public houses in Newgate Street. Having looked through the next couple of census pages for 1891, it would seem Thomas Bell lived very near to another innkeeper, then the census goes to Market Place. Checking this against the map, I would guess he was at the bottom pub shown on the map. This may help you to investigate further (try e-mailing Morpeth library) to find out the name of the establishment. Jay |

he is at newgate street in 1891 but 5 kings street on the 1901. he is still listed as innkeeper pub. does this ean he is likely to have moved pubs? or could the pub be on the corner of 2 streets? i have looked at the map on the site you reccommended janet, but cant get it clear enough on my laptop (main pc poorly!!!) |

I saved the map to my pictures and then homed in on Newgate Street and enlarged that bit. Couldn't find King Street - don't know if it is a renaming of part of Newgate Street, or whether he moved to a separate establishment. Don't know the area well, I'm afraid. Just a general point - I have found the maps on this site brilliant. Managed to get one for the town where my father was born, saved, cropped and enlarged it. Not only does it show the house where my father was born, but also the school he attended, complete with dividing playground wall - I found some memoirs he'd written (on the back of gold lining paper from his fag packets!!!) and he talks about his first day at school and the dividing wall across the playground - his elder sister was in the other part of the playground!! Sorry to hijack your thread, but if anyone else has 1800/1900 links with Northumberland, do try this site and look at the maps for places of interest. Jay |
