hi karen it dosnt say when she became mrs ann shaw the paper was the sunday news 1927,but it dosnt mention marys last name i know ann married william tyler in 1866 in yorktown camberley surrey,is this of any help joyce

Joyce When did Ann Tyler become Ann Shaw and what record is she referring to?. This would narrow down the interview date. If we could then find the interview in a newspaper then it might indicate Mary's surname. With kind regards Karen

mrs shaw was getting interviewed about the army record which was difficult to beat they said as she was the ,daughter,sister,wife and mother of soldiers and theats when she mention her sister mary but the lady who gave me the informant did.nt have her surname joyce

yes she was ann mclaughlin when she married william tyler so in 1866 she was mrs tyler then became mrs ann shaw that was her name when interviewed joyce

Just to clarify timings. Are you saying that Mrs A. TYLER was interviewed about her sister Mary and that Mrs Tyler later became Mrs SHAW? This might help to narrow the time of the burial. Gwyn

Joyce A bit long winded and have made some assumptions..... Using the same approach as Malcolm I identified in the 1881 census all the Mary's with the key word America born 1836 +/- 5 years (just in case) and then isolated all the ones with British subject (about 16 of them).This assumes that Mary was still alive in 1881 and that she would have put British Subject on the census form. I then looked at a website that had a list of all the individuals who received the Indian Mutiny Medal. All individuals who served would have received the medal. The list includes all the men who served and were awarded the medal. I then checked the info on the 1881 census to see if the husband's name appeared on the medal role. (7 of them appeared). I then checked these 7 names against free bmd marriages for 1851-1880 (assuming they got married in the UK)to see if a Mary McLaughlin could have married any one of them. Only 1 had a match........ Mary McLaughlin married John Foster Q3 1856 in Liverpool. (Based on the 1851 census this would have put Mary at 21) There are 9 John Foster's receiving the Indian Mutiny Medal (http://members.ozemail(.)com(.)au/~clday/MutinyF.htm) In 1881 John Foster is with Mary in Kent and there are a number of children with them. John's occupation is a fitters labourer - would this be a plausible occuption if previously he had served in the army? Whilst they have a number of children the eldest would have been born in 1864 which would have been after the mutiny and therefore Mary could have gone across to India. Mary also has a middle initial (O). Is there anyone you can check with to see if these names or locations are familiar? Not sure if you want to investigate further bearing in mind that I have had to make a number of assumptions and it may all be coincedence. Karen

Hi Joyce. If you have Ancestry try this-------- Go to the UK Census & enter Mary birth year 1836 +/- 2 keyword (at the bottom) America hit search. 8 names come up that were born in America in the 1861 English census, there are more for other parts. Hope this will be of help. Malcolm.

yes she would have had to live not far from the palace but it dosnt mention in the news paper people were interviewing her sister as they said it would be difficult to beat military as she was the daughter,sister,wife,mother of soldiers she was mrs a tyler and then later remarried mrs a shaw,she was my gggmother,so were do i begin to look and thank you for your replys,sorry didnt answer soon but was of line,will be off line now till tomorrow as one hour time different joyce

If Mary was sent for by the Queen, can we assume that she was in reasonable travelling distance from London and must have survived the Indian troubles. Probably she is with her husband at a military base. .....If only we could find her in 1861. To be a civilan buried with Military honours would have been unusual, I would have thought, ..especially for a woman. I wonder if Camberley has a research library or similar that could help you. Joyce Buried with military honours..... any chance that she might have received a medal/commendation for her heroic actions. (not sure which one she would have got) If it was the Indian mutiny then you should be able to narrow it down to a specific timeframe to do the search over. Also the event might have been mentioned in the London Gazette or Times. You might be able to restrict the list of possible surnames based on any first named mentioned and then cross reference to to any marriages under her maiden name (hope that makes sense!) Karen

If she was in India she must have gone there either in a nursing capacity or as a wife. If she did carry water to her husband, she would need to have married between 1851 and 1857 / 1858 ... but maybe it was in India. Gwyn

well theres no marriages showing on FreeBMD from 1855 -1881 for Mcgockland BUt theres absolutely loads ,all areas, for Mary Mclaughlin. Bit of a needle in the haystack at the momemt..as you say Shirley

only in 1851 she was 15 yrs old ana thats all i have not much is it as it looks like she might have been born in amercia as her fathers occ was private soldier

i have one of my gggg aunts who was sent for by queen victoria who sent acoach for her to come and have tea at the palace,now she my gggg aunt mary was buried in camberley with military honours for the Indian muntiny as she crawled over slain bodies risking her own life to take water to her husband,but i dont know her married name so i cant look for her grave,can anyone help thank you her name was mary mcgockland or spelt mclaughlin ,amercian britsh subject joyce from holland
