You could try ,, www National Archives dot gov dot uk or Google National Archives. for 'Seamans Records', if and when you find anything in your search, order them via their Digital Express copy service on the site. sometimes there is a photo included! Not sure what years this covers but. Price (£) 3.50 Good Luck. Babz |

My grandfather and his best mate were Merchant Seamen in Southampton, I haven't found them on the National Archives site, but I went to the Local Studies Centre in Southampton where I managed to get copies of both their records, and photo's. Perhaps a local studies centre in or near Bolton would have records. maggie |

Seamans pouches are well worth a look at. They can contain Photos, next of kin, addresses, descriptions, ships he's been on seaman ship qualifications. Lots of information. If your unlucky they don't have much. They are free to look at in the National archives. I've looked at some recently and now wish I had some seaman in my family. Good luck Jane |

Southamton Archives hold the Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen 1918-1941. For a fee of £7 they will search the index if you are unable to visit yourself. They did a search for me recently and found 3 cards for my grandfather. Norma |

Hi Gillian I found a record for a great uncle on the National Archives site which was well worth the £3.50. Unfortunately he was being discharged for conduct unbecoming, but it gave details of his tattoos (a mermaid on his left arm) colour of eyes, complexion, height as well as punishment. Fantastic!
