hi all can I pick your brains? I have a Charles Williams 1821(or 1824) who is listed on the 1851 census living in Morsley Durham as being born in the united states with the abbreviation BS - I assume this is the state but fot the life of me can't fathom out which! But on the 1861 census he is living in Dawden Durham and is down as being born in Ireland! Can't find him in 1841 but he married in england and his daughter Margaret was born 1845. Didn't think it was usual to migrate from the states to Ireland or England -it all seemed the other way round. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Angela x

B S means that he was a British Subject born abroad. The whole of Ireland at that time came under British rule.Obviously parents returned to U K some time after the birth.Does that make sense?

hi Liz thanks for that.Guess he may have come back alone as no trace of them in 1841.Just seems unusual - thort everyone was trying to get away not back! There are loads of Charles Williams in the us census for 1830 and as don't give ages just states it's virually impossible to search! Was holding on to the hope I might get a state. Thanks again Angela x
