help needed finding cemetery

hi all,this might sound like a strange question,but how do i go about finding out where someone is buried,i live in australia and on our death certificates it tells you when and where the funeral was,which is a great help in research,but living here i have no idea where to start as there seem to be so many cemetaries and i dont know which ones would be in my familys area. any help,would be very much appreciated, thanks lesley |

Hi Lesley Depends on the years and places. In the first half of the 19th century in NSW and England, most people were buried in the local churchyard. Later in municipal cemeteries, on the cities and towns, but still in churches in the country. For earlier deaths, look in the local churches, ask for a look up of the UK National Burial Index. For later deaths, google search for the local government area where they died and see which is the most likely cemetery. If you want some help/ideas, post some dates and places and I will look. Also, just because the funeral service was in one church doesn't mean they were buried there, some of my ancestors were Methodist but the local burial site was in the Anglican churchyard. |
