Although the GRO index for that era did record mother's maiden name the certificates did, or if you can't pinpoint a likely certificate to order, how about baptism records for the village where you think he was born?

Have you got enough information to get your grandfather's birth certificate? That is a must before you can go anywhere else as it will give you the names of parents and mother's maiden name.

Sounds odd question, but maybe the missing link to finding out my grandfathers details. Thanks to village gossip i have discovered that my grandfather may have been born to a local family name of pickmere in county of montgomeryshire in 1917-1920. he died during the war. i have traced the relevant family, whilst most moved away there is one female remaining who married a jones in 1880 at the age of 36. The 1881 and 1891 census show them living alone still, but in 1901 they were in peterborough registered as boarders. I am presuming they were there on hols or something, but still no child listed. This would by now make her 57, unlikely that she would have had a child at this age I know. How can I trace through births when they didnt list the mothers maiden name on records then? as this is the only way i can think of checking to see if they had children, as if they didnt, then all the info ive had so far has been wrong. complicated i know, but i have no other routes to follow. any ideas gratefully received. thanks
