I have found my ancestors on the 1851 census in the ecclesiastical district of St Michaels in Manchester. The sub registration district is St George. Can anyone tell me which Registration district this come under on the GRO? Thanks in advance. Jo xx |

Hi Marilyn Thanks for your reply. I am looking for a birth of a Mary Berry c1841 in Manchester and looking on Ancestry there are a number of them, so to narrow down my search I was wondering if this district would come under Manchester or Salford. Jo xx |

Hi Jo I have many ancestors born and baptised in the St Georges and St Michaels area of Manchester and they all lived around Hulme, if this is any help. Marilyn |

Chorlton and Hulme are definitely Manchester, not Salford. |

Hi Jo Nearly all my family were St Machael and St George. They are definately Manchester. Its strange because my Mums best friend was a Mary Berry, and my Mum lived in Ardwick. What are the addresses you have for them. Ann |

Can I point out that registration wasn't compulsory until 1875 Reg |

Thanks Amanda, Ann & Reg for your replies. Ann - At the time of the 1851 census they were living at Clough Folly? St Michaels Manchester. By 1856 they had moved to North Wales. Reg - I have found the registration for one of her siblings, so I assume they would have registered her too. Jo xx |
