I've been trying to find my elusive great grandmother Sarah Jane Dinsdale .She vanished from home when my mom was about 10 (1947) and was never heard of again, she was about 70 years old then. I've trawled the BMDs for a death and found one with the right name about the right age.Sent for death cert but this Sarah Jane is the widow of Owen Dinsdale an agricutural worker. I looked for a marriage of Owen to Sarah Jane but cant find one that would fit.Could some have a look on the 1901 and see if they can find Owen for me please? I'm assuming from the death cert they would have lived in or around yorkshire.(My ancestry subs have run out and can't afford to renew till next month) Death cert 11 march 1956 Northallerton Sarah Jane Dinsdale aged 76

Thank you both for looking, don't know how else to narrow it down. Thought if I could find a marriage of Owen to Sarah Jane it would help but nothing at all for them too. This Great grandmother of mine has been the biggest headache ever!

If Sarah Jane Dinsdale is your great grandmother, do you have her child's birth certificate (either her son or daughter - whichever was your mum's parent)? If not do you have their name and approximate date of birth? If you could find this it would have Sarah Jane's maiden name on it. Kath. x

Hi Kath, Sarah Jane is a nightmare! Her maiden name was Moore, she had my grandmother Alice Moore in 1900, then son Albert Ray in 1905 when she pretend to be married, then Florence Moore in 1908. She then married in 1911 to Thomas Dinsdale, he was killed in France in 1915. She never remarried after that. My mom remembers her going missing and the police coming round to the house. My Mom has always wondered what happend to her and I'd thought I'd see what I could find .

If she was married to Thomas Dinsdale and not Owen Dinsdale, then I think you probably have the wrong death certificate. Have you looked for a marriage for her after she left home? I know she was quite old at the time, but you never know!! Kath. x

This death cert I got was the only one of trawling through ancestry that fit her name and age. I knew it was a long shot but had to try. Thing is I can't find a marriage for this Sarah Jane to the Owen on the death cert.If I could do that I could rule it out completely. I got her son Albert Ray's birth cert and for ages I thought I had the wrong one as she called herself Jennie Ray (formerly Moore) even though she never married Alberts father. families eh?

I wonder if the Sarah Jane on the death certificate you have could have married just using her middle name. There are two marriages for Owen Dinsdales on the partial index on Ancestry - one to a Jane Johnson in 1904 and the other in 1897 where there are four names on the page, one being a Jane Iveson. I know this is clutching at straws but I don't know what else to suggest. Could she have reverted to her maiden name and her death registered as that? I suppose anything could be possible if no one saw her again after her disappearance. Kath. x
