Thanks for your suggestion Von, I may venture down this route but at the moment, as always I keep getting sidetracked. I was originally just looking to complete the set of census returns and then got side tracked by the change of wife and now this!! Must try harder to stay on one road!! |

Hi Maid Marion, yes the wife is also described as Annuitant. They are aged 73 and 63 respective I think so it could very well be the pension. David is shown on one census as a Proprietor so he obviously owned his own business, but Mary would have been his wife for 10 years or less. Maybe they missed the 'wife of' part out! Thanks for your input, Jo |

Have you found them on previous census? 'Normally', annuitant means pensioner, as you said, receiving a pension. Sometimes if the husband is receiving a pension, the wife is described as wife of annuitant or annuitant. |

I have an ancestor David Glasgow (which Wanda kindly found) on 1871 wife Elizabeth but 1881 with wife Mary. In 1881 both David and Mary have occupation stated as annuitant. I have found this to mean 'Receiver of an Annuity - An annuity is income paid to a beneficiary at regular intervals, for a fixed period or ascertainable period (usually the lifetime of a nominee) in return for a lump sum payment having been previously made into the scheme by a subscriber - i.e. a spouse, benefactor or employer'. Would this money be likely to be from Elizabeths Will maybe, but if so, why would Mary be getting the money? Any insights appreciated. Thanks, Jo |
