Hi A cordwainer is a shoemaker - at least in theory one of the better quality shoes using good quality leather for the first time. Others used leather which was being recycled! After two generations of cordwaining my ancestors became boot and shoe factory owners. Clive

Julie At first I thought it was 45 too...but the 4 is not like the 4 a few entries below them. Closer look suggests it is a 6 with incomplete loop. Gwyn

Cordwainer....and wife is cordwainer's wife.... bracketed to William and shown as Chelsea Pensioner, North Militia. Gwyn

Having problems reading the occupation of William Burnett age 65 in the 1861 census. The census reference is RG9/3879, folio 46, page 16. Could someone please see if they can make it out? Thank you. T.O.R. ;o))
