finding volume and page

having found the area and the approx time of a marriage how do i get to where it says volume number and page number to find the exact date if anyone could help

If its between 1837 and about 1915, I look on the freebmd site http://freebmd.rootsweb.*com/cgi/search.pl Remove * Then I check the reference on Ancestry. Gwyn

The volume and page numbers will not tell you the date. The only way to determine the exact date is to purchase the cert. You do, however, need the refs to order from the GRO. Reg

Hi David, The freebmd site that Gwyn refers to has one advantage over Ancestry, which is that you can search on the bride AND groom's names at the same time. Very useful if the names are fairly common. :-) Chris

freebmd only covers up to about 1915, and is not complete even for the years it covers.. Reg

Very true, Reg, but I've completely transcribed all entries for one surname from 1837 to 1915, using freeBMD as a basis and checking each image as well. I would say that out of 3500 names, maybe 30 were missing from the transcribed index. So it's very nearly there, and it's much better than nothing at all. :-) Chris
