Are you sure there wasn't another birth? The time on a birth certificate often indicates twins!! Kath. x

the birth wasn't registered at that time - that was when the child was born It is worth checking to see if it was a multiple birth - although in the early days you often got keen registrars who recorded the times for all births

Thanks Kathleen and Tom, I did'nt realise this.....the child registered was their youngest child...if this was a multiple birth he is the only one that is registered in the church baptism records....perhaps a twin died at birth. Linda

I have a cert with the time on, the lady in question wasn't a twin. Have recently been in touch with someone else related to the same family, her relative has the time on her birth cert too (she was a twin) think it must just be the registrar as was same for both the certs

Like Tom says, it could be just a keen registrar. I went into a register office to order a birth certificate from July 1837, which happened to be number 1 in the register! It caused the registrar a bit of a problem because she had to hand copy it, rather than type it, due to the time of birth being entered. She said she had looked to see whether it was a twin, but it wasn't, and all the births in the first few pages of the register had the time of birth entered too. It would be worth checking with the local register office just to see whether this applies to the births around the one you're interested in. Chris
