Thank you for you help and advice. I will give it a go over the week-end. Yes, I do backup my FTM, to a CD and an external hard drive. I would hate to lose all my hard work. Regards

I see what you mean about people you dont have a death date for - not thought of that one! Are there many and can you put an about date for them? Have a go, you can always do it again if it doesnt transfer how you wanted it. I hope you back up your FTM to at least a cd!!

Hi Pauline When you privatise your file, it doesn't remove the individuals, it just sets all their sensitive information to 'private', such as date of birth and suchlike. This is from the Family Tree Maker website: Family Tree Maker allows you to protect the privacy of living individuals by designating certain facts as private. When you privatize your file, Family Tree Maker temporarily replaces all data fields for living individuals with the word “private.” Only relationships between living individuals will be retained. This process prevents sensitive information from being imported, exported, printed, copied, or published on the Internet Sam x

Heather, sorry I didn’t see your last message before I had to sign off this afternoon. I’ve had a look tonight on FTM about the privatise, and I now see what to do about this. This maybe a silly question, but as it says privatising it will leave out living member’s details when I transfer. Now on some ancestors I haven’t always known their year of death and left it black, will it think these people are still alive and leave them off, even though it is 100 years ago? I just need to understand before I go and mess things up. No I haven’t created a home page yet with FTM? What exactly is this? Is it a web site for the Internet? I’m learning all the time.

If any one else leaves advice for me now, I will not be able to respond. I have to get back to work for the afternoon. Will check here again tonight. Regards Pauline

Pauline, I dont think a change of date will be any problem, you are replacing the whole caboodle. The privatise button stops any living persons name/info. Have you not created your own home page yet with FTM?

Thank you for that advice Heather, I will have to look at FTM. Yes there are things that I wouldn’t want to transfer. Didn’t know about the privatise on FTM. I thought maybe you transfer and then delete. It wont confuse it if I have changed someone’ date of birth since entering on GR. It wont think it is another person? Pauline

Its easy, honest. Just create a gedcom with your FTM info and name it something with GR in it, so you recognise it easily. Go to the link on the left here for importing/exporting and just follow it through. I dont think you have to delete all GR now, your new info will over ride the old stuff. Just a word of warning, I had trouble with my notes going over with my FTM gedcom. So make sure you remove any living persons (use the privatise option on the FTM). Im pretty sure someone said there is no option for removing the notes. Im sure others may be able to make that clearer than me!

Please can someone give me some advice. I started building my family tree on GR over 3 years ago, and kept it up to date. But then about 18 months ago I bought Family Tree Maker software and imported my tree from GR. For sometime I did maintain both trees, but in the end found it hard going. So GR is by no means up to date. What is the best way to correct this situation. I don’t really want to sit with a list and tick off names. Can I up load from FTM to GR now. Do I have to delete my whole tree on GR first, because I have moved some people around families, I don’t want a complete mess. I did read the advice on here, but would like to hear about real experiences first. Thank you Pauline
