My gg grandfather died inthe Workhouse, but from the early 1900s, they were not allowed to show that on the certs. My gg-grandfather was shown as dying at an address - but the family knew that he had died in the workhouse. I was able to get dates of in and out from the Tyne Wear Archives Anne |

Many thanks for that... Puts it a bit more into perspective. Next step then is to get his death cert - may make a bit more sense. Clare x |

Clare people didn't have to go into the workhouse to go into the hospital ,or Infirmary as they were known. private medical care was beyond the ordinary folk so illness / childbirth was dealt with at home. if a doctor decided h e couldn't deal with it at home them people would go for treatment or childbirth into the workhouse infirmary , They would receive treatment and then return home. Often tho the treatment wasnt enough and the patient would pass away . Lots of Workhouse infirmaries later became the local hospital, the was no stigma attached to being in the Infirmary. Shirley |

Thanks Shirley, I did wonder on the infirmary front. The thing is his wife died some 25 years later - not in the same place tho (same town). Surely if he was in a workhouse then so would she, or am I just summising a little too much??? Which ever way, it sounds a bit sad to me. Clare x |

Am a bit excited, as I have just discovered the Kent Parish records online site (Iknow I'm a bit slow!!). Have been trawling through them and came across my gg grandfathers burial record. The place of death is stated as 'union' and nothing else. Has anyone any ideas what type of place this may be?? Many thanks CLare x |

sounds like the local workhouse they were known as union Workhouses or the Union infirmary if the patient was in the hospital and not a workhouse inmate |
