Hi Potty, I've done the CWGC and found a few H Arnold's, any ideas why some state 'Son of ..............' or 'Husband of..............' because if they have the name of the dead soldier surely they had the next of kin on record???

Have you tried the Commonwealth War Graves site? There are several Herbert Arnolds there, one might be yours. Also could he have emigrated?

If he may have been killed in WW1 then electoral registers won't help. Kath. x

Hi Dizzy, His middle initial was R (probably Richard) he did have brothers and sisters, unfortunately only one is still alive and she denies his existance. Have tried all the message boards and others of GR

How far back do electoral registers go Kathleen? I suspect he may have been killed inn WW1 but can't confirm this. There is one sister who is still alive who is 18years younger than him, she has no recollections of him at all in fact deny's he ever existed!!!

Have you tried contacting other people on GR who have Arnolds in their tree from the same area/time? He may have used a different name, do you know what his middle name was? Did he have brothers and sisters? You have to use any clues that you may have. dizzy

Have you tried electoral registers for the area where you think he might have lived (these would be at the nearest library to the address). Could he have gone abroad? Kath. x

Firstly, thanks to all who have tried to help me recently but I am hoping some different people may be able to come up with some ideas. Just where can I find my uncle? He is Herbert R Arnold born 1900 to Ellen L Arnold (nee Turner)and Charles S Arnold in Shoreditch. I have found his birth registration and he is entered on the 1901 census but then vanishes, no marriage, no death. I can find him on any of the military records, deserters or anywhere. Has anyone any ideas where to search next please? Linda
