All I had to start with was remembering that my Mum said that her Mothers maiden name was something like...'Hovis' (like the brown bread people advert she said)...Birthdays and surnames were not important back then. I also knew where her grave was....Annie Matilda Ford.Date of birth and Date of death. (before I was born) I must have spent a small fortune looking for Annie Matilda! then I put a request on here......It turned out that Annie was transcribed wrong.........Annie Matilda GOERS!!!!!.....True name was OVERS. (The Walsall accent let me down) Back in the 1700s the name of Overs was HOVERS and before that (Oxford accents).....in rural Oxfordshire it was HOVARD!. If only I had asked on these boards 1st!...... I have since paid my subs to Ancestry but still find the best way is to ask on here...(I'm still trying to find my way around Ancestry)....One day when I grow up (age 58).....I will be as good as the members are on here lol Thankyou everyone that has helped me in the past... Gerri x PS...My Grandmothers birth was reg in her Mothers maiden name (Poole).....Now who am I?.......Agghhhh!....Dont ya just love this hobby? lol |

When I first started ..greener than green could ever be... I purchased hundreds of pounds worth of credits from GR cos I didnt know better...not realising that I could get the info elsewhere..My fear was the amount that Ancestry said to pay for a years subscription and giving my details on the internet for my bank account..I was so scared. Now after being on here for 9mths I can say that the best thing I did was pay my subscription to Ancestry...But the best deal I got was the people on GR..Such a pity we cant put the best bits together..that is Gr people and Ancestry info ...then we would have the perfect site!!!!!!!!!! You need to get your grans birth certificate (GRO £7) that will give her mum and dads names and dads occupation and the addy where she was born - that will put you on the way. |

I've asked my mum about her grandparents names and she can only vaguely remember as my g/grandmother died when my grandmother was in her teens and he remarried. My grandmother left home as soon as she could as she didn't get on with her stepmother so my mum doesn't have too much information about them (plus shes old so has a dodgy memory..lol) Yeah hubby has said he'll get it sorted for me but I just wanted to try and make a start myself being as Im supposed to be the one who knows her way around websites..lol |

Thanks for the advise My hubby is a member on ancestry so I think I'll let him try and find my info. So far I've only got as far as my maternal g/grandfather and I think it matches someone elses tree but as he is not directly related to her she doesn't have his wife and children listed so I can't check. I want to try and find his parents names. *(Im very new to genealogy so am a bit green) |

If you have his marriage you can buy the marriage cert and find his fathers name and occupation and his wifes full name, both their places of residence/occupations - then you trace backwards through census, birth certs, marriage certs etc. Is your husband more experienced and can help you? |

If you're not using ancestry, where you can view censuses and do BMD searches, I've read on threads here about a site called freeBMD (with the usual www and co dot uk, I guess). Why not try on there first for what you want, and if you don't find it, ask on the 'records office' board on GR. People are very helpful on there - as well as on here! Bx |

No not worth buying credits on GR. Time you allow for mistranscriptions you will be spending a fortune and still not find the info. Maureen |

I'm unsure whether to buy any credits as it doesnt say anywhere how many credits it takes per search. I know I get 50 credits for £5 but how many credits does one search take? |

If you mean GR credits..........DON'T buy any till you've made certain you can't get your info anywhere else. What records are you planning to view with the credits? Reg |
