Hi Andrea Yes it is greek or persian so ive been told, but this was a girl from Barnoldswick, Yorkshire the mind boggles. Sharmala.

Thanks for the replies! Jay, I don't think they are non conformist as the baptisms are all CofE, but I'll see as I trace her line further back. Paraysitis sounds Greek to me and my other half says it sounds like a surname (he's Greek, so he should know!)

Mehetabel is Hebrew and a Biblical name. Were they non-conformist, perhaps? Jay

Andrea If you google Mehetabel, it gives a few references to the name. and also there is a road in London of the same name. Its not as weird as one name i have in my family Paraysitis! so odd. Sharmala.

I have just found out details of an ancestor with the name transcribed as Mehitabel? Mehetabeel? Mehebabl? Mehetabel? Mahetabel? I've never heard of it and I was just wondering if anyone else has come across this name, or could tell me which version is correct. It sounds a bit biblical to me! These versions are taken from the childrens baptisms and her marriage (every time it is different!) Thanks
