Coo er would upholstery be so specialised - at least two girls on the same job (I'll bet they lodger was Annie's friend fromwork). Not that I can think of any better reason for Upholstress (Mail Cart) Clive |

The Carp after joiner I can understand - it would certainly fit with whatI know of the family. William's father and gfather were wheelwright/joiners. An Upholstress makes sense but a mail cart needing upholstery?!! Or is there some of mail cart I have not heard of? Clive |

Thanks to all for your help. Crescent Road seems to have been built after 1895 so yes I think it probably was a bit up market. The Buckle family had moved from Linthorpe Road which is the main street of Middlesbrough. There is a possibility that the Buckles were builders and perhaps then like today builders built a house for themselves in new developments. Clive |

Yes I agree, the word Carp is just to categorise the occupations back at the office. Annie as Upholsteress (Mail Carts) looks right to me aswell - check out the lodger Amy, she has the same job. Actually quite a posh street if you look at all the occupations there. |

Hi Clive, After William and Thomas' occupations, it says Carp, i.e. carpenter. It would have been added after the census was taken to categorise the occupation of joiner into a wider group (for statistical purposes). Annie's occupation appears to be Upholstress (Mail Carts) I think. Chris |

on here (from 1901 site) it says Joiner Carp looks like cash to me though on image on Ancestry to look on here for free as occ bit go to the right hand side and you will see search 1901 you might have to click from tips to records a few times as it keeps changing Grrrr. Jeanette just noticed it is working now if you click on records at top of page wasn't working last week |

In the 1901 census (RG 13/4580 - 80) if you know how to use that, I don't, there is a William Buckle born 1848, Stillingfleet, and his daughter Annie. Both have as the last word in occupation something that looks like Cash which does not make much sense to me as they are also down as workers. Thanks. Clive |
