Looks like wife Mary was engaged in the shop. Possible it was their shop and had their name above the door ! oooooh that would be nice.. Have you looked on the other census what was Peter's occupation then ?

This website www*rmhh*co*uk (change *'s to dots) says: Marine Store Dealer = Proprietor of a store selling equipment to Mariners. Something similar to a Ship's Chandler I would think. Maureen

Hi Marie, Found them on 1861. RG9 3827 / 61 / 5 All Saints Newcastle upon tyne. Peter senior was a dealer in marine stones and wife engaged in a shop. Joan

Hi Peeps Can someone please have a look for this family for me in 1861. I've got them on the 1871 census in Clifford Street, Newcastle upon Tyne as the following: Peter Cowley Head 54 Born Ireland Mary Cowley Wife 50 Born Scotland Children are Mary, Cath, Susannah, Peter, Margaret and Ann, all born Newcastle upon Tyne. Can't seem to find them in 1861. Thanks very much, Marie x
