Maybe his father wasn't plain John Moss, perhaps he anglicised his name as well. What was Charles wife called? Sam x |

Hi Reggie, I 'think' I have the right marriage cert. On it he states his occupation as mariner, and his father as John Moss, mariner. But If the 'stories' had any grain of truth in them I would have thought his father would not be a plain John Moss. On one census return he states his place of birth as Germany. The name is so common that I am swiming in a sea of confusion. Kathlyn |

Have you got his marriage cert? If not, that has to be your number one priority........you can't get anywhere without it. What does he state to be his birthplace on census returns? Reg |

Family stories are facinating, but then they can, and do, turn out to be very elaborate embroideries. Several stories in my maternal line have been proved to be just that, 'stories', but they must have had some grain of truth in them. So the story goes......My 2x great grand father came to England about 1855 from, Denmark !!! Russia !!!, was from a wealthy shipping family !!!! was a Rabbi !!!! sailed to Ireland !!!! met 2x great grandmother there !!!! eventually landed in the Poplar/ Stepney area of London, worked in the London docks. Oh and by the way, Anglizised his name from Karl Mosskovitch to Charles Moss. I can trace from his marriage in 1861 via census and birth certs etc. but where do I go to find him pre 1861 bearing in mind the hand me down stories mentioned above???? Kathlyn |
