I've just discovered that he lived until he was 88: Cheshire Death indexes for the years: 1858 Surname Forename(s) Age Sub-District Registers At Reference TUFFNELL Benjamin 88 West Macclesfield Cheshire East WMC/19/49 http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ I have found the Cheshire bmd and the Staffs bmd exceedingly good. With my Tuffnall/Tuffnell/Tufnell surname I have been able to track the family in Staffs, and now I'm tracing the cousins in Cheshire by the same method.

And we complain about the retirement age!! I'm always surprised at the longevity of some of the family members I find. I suppose with the lack of pensions they were forced to work until they died unless they were very ill or disabled or were relatively well off. Some seemed to have annuities, and my naval ancestors seemed to get nice naval pensions, but I suspect many had no provision for old age.

It could be engineer - he is still going strong in 1851 - by then he is a labourer.

He's 70, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is retired!
