Thanks, Janet, I think I have found my answer with help from Portland Rose. Everyone else's tips, including yours, have helped, though, so thanks to all. It has been a good lesson - to remember to be able to think outside the square and not be so convinced that the little information that I have is automatically absolutely correct. Cheers to all, Sue

Thank you, Rose, I think that is her. Also think that I am going to have to get an Ancestry subscription and really get going with this! Thanks for your help. I have also emailed the Royal College of Music, London, (Nanse had a Performer's Degree from there, as well as being an Eistedfodd Gold Medallist) and there may be some hope of their archives librarian finding something for me. Wish the singing ability had been passed on! Cheers Sue

Margaret and Alexandra, thanks for your comments. I guess you would think that, if you're going to call someone Nanse, for whatever reason, you still might spell it Nance! I had a similar problem with my Mum's aunt - known as Minnie to all and sundry, and impossible to find until I realised her actual name was Mary Rosana! Thanks to all Sue.

Rose, It didn't take me as long as I had thought! I have my great-grandfather's journal, and now I see that he has written 'Nancy born at Carmarthen Sept 1 (?) 1893'. So that explains the given name - she is Nancy, although I don't believe that any of the family called her that. As for death date, no idea. I know that she was still living in December, 1925, as I have found a brief mention in a book about British music. I really need to find a way to copy and preserve this journal! Thanks, Rose. Sue

Thanks, Christine, it really looks as if this is one of those pet names that is used for many different names. Sue

My mother had an Aunt Nance. I found out through family tree research that her name was Ann Elizabeth. Margaret

Hi I have welsh family and my dad called his gran's sister Nanse - she was called Hannah really. I guess it is a pet form of Hannah or Ann/e as this was often changed to Nancy - so the welsh probably just usually went for Nanse rather than Nancy.

Rose, Apologies for delay; I added my message while at work and have just got home. I need to do a bit of a check for Nanse's birth, and I don't believe that I have her death details. I will have a look and try to get the birth details on this thread tonight. Thanks Sue

Hello, all. I am researching my Dad's family, including his aunt, Nanse Fuller Mills (or Fuller-Mills), a Welsh soprano of the early 20th century. While I am stuck in finding much about her, one thing I thought that GR members might be able to help me with is this: is / was Nanse a common given name for girls, especially in Wales? If not, is it short for something other than Nancy? We have no record of Nanse being called by any other name, though I must admit I have not ordered a certificate; she is a 'tangent' rather than a direct line, but still tantalising. I would be grateful for any ideas or advice. Thanks very much Sue.
