On the 1871 census it says that my 3xgt. grandmother was born in Porechin, Forfar. I have tried to google it but can't find this place at all. Does anyone know what else it could be. Any help appreciated. UPDATE. Thanks everyone, bought some credits for S.P. & it is Brechin. Hilary. x |

1871 I presume this is the entry Jane Baird abt 1786 Porechin, Forfarshire Head Edinburgh St Andrew Have you got her on any other census? The entry shows a son David b 1823 Lasswade, occupation of printer 1861 just gives her place of birth as Forfar and David still as Lasswade Maureen |

Hi Maureen, yes that is her. On 1841 census it just says born outside of county. Then on 1851 census they are in England. That just says born in Scotland. Sometime between 1851&1861 they moved back to Edinburgh. She has been another of my brick walls. So thought I would have a go & try to find her. Hilary. |

Hi, yes I did wonder if it was Brechin as that came up on Google. Do you have any idea where I would find Brechin records. Which county is it in. Thanks Hilary. |

Hi, no that is all it says. She was living in Edinburgh in 1871. Think I will have to try & find out how to access Brechin records, if nothing else, to eliminate Brechin. Her name was Jean Mearns, I have her death cert. from Scotlands People & it says her father was David Mearns & mothers maiden name Kerr. I can't find a marriage for these 2 names either. Hilary. |

Also coming around to Brechin as a possible. Just tried writing it in old fashioned writing and does look very similar - Po could easily be mistaken for a B Maureen |

I would also say it's Brechin and on IGI Forfarshire becomes Angus. There's a marriage for a David Mearns and a Margaret Jack in Brechin 22/11/1771. Who registered the death? Perhaps they didn't know her maiden name - or her maiden name may not have been the same as rest of her siblings? There's also the possibility that she was married before or after David Mearns, although that is usually written on the cert. The info on the death certificate (whilst usually very good) is only as good as the informant knows and as the registrar hears! Ages are frequently out and I saw one a few days ago where the widower gave HIS parental details instead of his wife's! |
