Horaay! Don't you just love when it works out like that? Thanks for your help Heather and everyone else who gave me a hand.

The thing is that actual entry relates to 'people coming here' and I wonder if it is the same boy as that born in London. It does give his address which should help tie in down.

Just checked his addy in 1891 and YES, its the same boy born in City of London - you have a winner!

Thanks for that Chris! I'd completely forgot about the free school records (id read about them when first starting on the Jewish side) i take it they would also list some of his siblings aswell? I will have a good look..... Liz

Well it looks as if he attended the Jew's Free School, admission date 12 March 1889. Go to www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Put Barnett Solomon (without the s) into search. The register is the second hit down. Chris

Heather, yep thats him. The family name is actually Solomons, with the S but it appears they dropped it on occasion. Im not 100% sure that it is the right family, as i haven't got direct information (ie on a marriage cert) that Joseph is his father. However.....on Barnett's death the informant is Louis, brother.......also i know this is not really concrete, but the names are very similar to those of my aunts and uncles. Barnett's first son was Joseph, also had a son Louis, daughter Katie and my father Michael. I know its not conclusive, but i think its the right family.

Chris, Barnett was born here, it was his grandfather Solomon Solomons that was born in Holland in c1812, and no sign of Naturalizations records.....but then again, in the early 1800s i doubt many bothered. I have used synagogues records a bit, but only for early marriages, i haven't had much luck with births.

Right, is this him? Why have you added an S to your look up query if I may ask - how are you sure which of these guys are yours?? about Barnett Solomon Name: Barnett Solomon Age: 19 Estimated birth year: abt 1882 Relation: Son Father's name: Joseph Mother's name: Sophia Gender: Male Where born: London City Civil parish: St Botolph Without Aldgate Ecclesiastical parish: St Botolph without Aldgate County/Island: London Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: London City Sub-registration district: St Botolph ED, institution, or vessel: 3 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 38 Household Members: Name Age Barnett Solomon 19 Dinah Solomon 8 Joseph Solomon 45 Kate Solomon 12 Louis Solomon 24 Mike Solomon 9 Rebecca Solomon 14 Solomon Solomon 22 Sophia Solomon 44

With surnames Solomon(s) and Jacobs I would guess they were both Jewish. Have you tried looking for synagogue records? Even if he was born here...Were his parents born here? Anything in NA records for naturalizations. My OH found quite a bit of background info for his ancestors in naturalization papers. Chris

Lizbeth, I can't resist an unusual name. I found him one the 1901 census RG13/297/25/7 age 28 he is a Tailor Machinist boarding at 7 Grey Eagle St, Spitalfields, Whitechapel. He was born in Poland and with a name like that he may be Jewish. I didn't find him on the 1891 so he may still have been in Poland. Cheers Vera

Heather, in the 1901 census i think he may have been Solomon without the 's' his parents were Joseph and Sophia. I know who Josephs parents are and also Sophia's parents and grandparents. Been relatively lucky as they haven't really been any challange to locate. I have come across Barnett as being a fish porter, fruit hawker, book maker and cigar maker, so i doubt if there are any records. I think he just went in between jobs, especially common in the East End i think. I was thinking about Electoral roles, but was unsure whether he would have been a registered voter, or not bothered! These are the only ones showing up - and the only one with the date of birth you give is from Poland? As per the 1891 census above? I cant believe this can be him as you say he was born London and you have managed to trace a long way back on the parents - or have you managed to get Polish records? Could you give us the full details you have for him and mum and dad please. Hello all! Just wondered if anyone could give any advice on how i could find more information on my grandfather. His name was Barnett Solomons, and i have got pretty far back with his maternal/paternal line, but am very lacking on any info on HIS life. He was born 1882, London City, was with one Elizabeth Jacobs (never married her) and died 1928 of TB. Oh yeah and had a few kids in between. Is there any way of finding out more about his life?? I don't think he fought in WW1, as i can't find any matching medal record. Any advice appreciated, as i really want to know more about this man!!
