Now back from dinner - a glass of wine in my hand! I orginally looked at this problem 3 years ago when I wasn't so proficient. Isn't it amazing how much you learn. I now know better methods of searching, and my research now gets much better results. However, Chris is a STAR because it might have been a while before I had got around to doing the search that she did. It just shows that by sharing a problem you get results faster, which is why I am on these pages daily.

Chris - I have now been able to find the birth record for Anne Newton who was on the 1841 census. 16 Aug 1812 Braceby - note that it was only just one month after the wedding date!

They would probably still be listed as 'cousins' if their fathers were cousins, as opposed to brothers........... Reg

I haven't got the marriage certificate yet - just his death certificate. He too was a licensed victualler, as was brother John Newton. However, I have census entries and know his wife was Mary Ann Durbin.

I could buy the marriage certificate, but as I have Blanche on the 1891 census with Ann Newton and Emily Newton and son George Herbert Newton (Newtons seemed to marry Newtons!) and given as a cousin, I assumed the link. Perhaps I ought to back it up by sending for the certificate, all the same. Thanks again Reggie - you have made me think!

Hi Reggie - Yes that is Charles Austin Newton. He married Mary Ann Durbin and had three children - Blanche Jeanette Durbin Newton, Frank and Charles Harry. I found that he and John were brothers from census entries and family members staying with each other. This is why I think that Charles is the one on the 1841 census - Ropsley is such a small place.

Chris - Well spotted! Thanks! I had never noticed that - no wonder I was confused, because it certainly didn't look like Isaac and I wanted so much for it to be John! More research to do now...

Have you noticed that the age for 'Isaac' is actually in the female column? I think this could be an Isabella maybe. Chris

I can't say it's them, but I can't rule it out either! Seeing I can't find them elsewhere I shall just have to bear it in mind. I can't find John Newton on the 1841 census either. He was born in Braceby Lincolnshire (just a couple of miles away) c. 1817. He died aged 69 in 1886. He married Ann Tuffnall in 1846 in Checkley Staffs and it states on his marriage certificate that he was a grocer in Burton on Trent. I looked for him there for 1841, but no joy! Then in 1851 he is staying with his wife and daughter Emily in Derby with brother in law Thomas Swindell, an inn keeper. He is now given as a fund holder. He moved south to become a licensed victualler.

Hello Elizabeth I'm afraid I don't think it says John either. (Mind you it doesn't look a lot like Isaac!) I agree that, sometimes the 1841 causes more problems than it solves. Angela

This Charles looks so right - correct age and place. It's so frustrating that no relationships are given - we don't even know if Isaac(?) is his father or not, or whether Ann is his sister> Thanks for looking, Jim.
