Thanks Maureen and Linda. Bit confused now (but it doesn' t take much!!). This is a friends family and the story goes that Sarah Dulhanty came from Ireland as a 16 year old and married John Totton. I have them getting married in St Marks, Hulme, Manchester in 1901. She has confirmed that the 1891 Totten family with John Totton is the right one, as is the 1901 Totten family without John Totten. As John Totten is not with his family in 1901, I presumed he had married by then, but he doesn't appear anywhere. It looks like the John Totton in South Manchester is married to an Isabelle, so it isn't him. So problem is, can't find Sarah Dulhanty if she isn't married by then, can't find John Totten living alone. 1901 census online index shows a Sarah Totton living in Pendleton in 1901 but her age is given as 55, so obviously too old, but would really appreciate if somebody could check this for me.
