I am having a problem with my great aunt see below. I cannot find her in 1891 nor can I find a death for her. Have found Frederick with his parents.

My great aunt born Mary Ann Freeman in the June Qtr 1868 in dist Amersham, Bucks is causing me a problem. Actual residence of her parents was in Charteridge, Bucks. She can be found with her parents William & Hannah Freeman in Chesham, Bucks on the 1871 & 1881 Census. In the March Qtr of 1888 she married Fredrick Baldwin in the district of Amersham. Then she disappears along with her new husband. It appears that she had a son called James Baldwin in the Dec Qtr of 1888 in Dist of Amersham. James can be found with his grandparents William & Hannah Freeman in Chesham on both the 1891 & 1901 Census. I cannot locate Mary Ann as either a Freeman or a Baldwin or locate Fredrick on the 1891 Census. In 1901 I found Maryann Freeman aged 33, born Charteridge, Bucks working as a servant (cook domestic) in Hampstead, London. No sign of husband Fredrick and she is using her maiden name again. She is still alive in 1901 in Hampstead using her maiden surname and no husband so I'm guessing she probably didn't die in childbirth.

Looks like there is no one with any ideas out there at the moment. Well it's nearly midnight here in Oz so I'm off too bed.

How do you know the one you found on the 1901 census is yours? quick look at BMD's Name: Mary Ann Freeman Birth: Jun 1868 - Amersham, Buckinghamshire Name: Mary A Freeman Birth: Dec 1866 - Amersham, Buckinghamshire not much difference in age, just a thought

Kerry Another thought - could Frederick have died & Mary Ann remarried? Maybe her new husband didn't want to take on her son, that's why he was with his grandparents. Angela

Thanks for the suggestions, she is just a problem child. I do not know where Fredrick was born or how old he was. I will order the marriage cert to see if it gives me any clues. Update.. I have now ordered the marriage certificate. Kerry

This situation seems to be common around those years. My hubbies grandma was born to a married couple, but was brought up by her granmother rather than her parents, even though they lived not far away. I have always wondered why she send a card on her dad's death saying something like 'to my most loving father' when he never brought her up, and in fact moved away from the area when she was about 16 and didn't take her with him. The Marriage Certificate arrived and revealed the following. It was definately my great aunt. Marriage took place in Jan 1888 Frederick was 23 years old a labourer, father Edward Baldwin Farm Labourer. Mary Ann was 20 years old and the daughter of William Freeman, Farm Labourer. Both resided in Chartridge, Chesham (Bucks). The witnesses were James Freeman (brother of Mary Ann) and Elizabeth Baldwin. A search of 1891 census revealed in Charteridge, Chesham a BALWIN family father Edward, mother Fanny and offspring including a son Frederick aged 26 listed as married. But still no sign of Mary Ann Baldwin or Freeman and I can't locate a death for her either. The 1881 census for the same family revealed a sister Elizabeth who was probably the other witness on the marriage cert. In 1901 Frederick is still living with mum and dad now aged 36 and listed as single.
