Hi Janet Do you know where the lady married? You might be able to look at the marriage registers for that church at a local history/family records centre. Depending on when she married (some earlier certificates don't contain as much information), the record should state whether she was a widow or a spinster. However, if you would have to travel a long way to your nearest FRC/local archives, it would obviously be cheaper (and definitely much quicker and easier) to pay £7.00 for the certificate. Amanda

Hi My nmae is Jan and I am helping my husband trace his family, will I need to get a marriage cert to find out if his great grandmother was a widow when she married or is their another way.Many thanks for any help. Regards Janet O'Regan

Unless you can find her on census pre 1901 then her marriage cert is the best way. I always buy certs anyway as a double check that I,m tracing the right family. its very easy to go off course. Shirley
