I am trying to purchase a marriage certificate of my great grandparents. They were James Scannell and Ellen Buckley and were married in Cork, Ireland. Their oldest child was born in 1902, so I was presuming that they married approx. 1900-1902 I went to Cork Register office, have read various information online, visited catholic churches etc. but all my enquiries tell me that I need to know the exact date of the marriage (month, day & year) I need the exact date before any attempt to refer to records is made Any ideas on how I can get the exact date bearing in mind the only info I have is that it is in Cork. I don't know the specific area of Cork. Any suggestions greatly welcomed Gail

Hi Gail Sorry, I have no experience of Irish marriages, but I would have thought if you had the date of the marriage, you may not need the certificate !! So how are you supposed to find the date first? Do they have any indexes, I don't recall that they do ? Don't forget that some people did not marry before their first child was born, but after, some even a long, long time after. Even in the early 1900s. Sorry not much help but commiserations Diane

Are James and Ellen together in the 1901 census?...Hopefully that would narrow the time scale a bit. There must be a way to access the information. I have a copy of a marriage in Cork in 1909. It was by the 'Rites of the Church of Ireland'...I wonder if that makes a difference for accessing records. Admittedly we didn't find it ourselves but were sent it by an Irish researcher who we employed some years ago. We had very little knowledge of the family but he managed to find quite a bit for us. Thanks both for your responses Discussions with elder family members imply that James and Ellen were married before their oldest child in Cork. (The other children were then born in South Wales). I have been unable to locate them on any census as a married couple. I have found the family names, narrowed down to the street where they lived, but without the parents details (which would be on the marriage cert) I cannot confirm the details. The same family name occupied several addresses! I would be interested in the details of the Irish researcher you have used Gwyn, if you still have them Thanks again Gail
