I have recently uploaded an updated tree from Family Tree Maker after privatising the file, this has worked okay but there is a small part of the notes which I would like to delete. Everytime I delete it and press save it comes up with 'YEAR OF BIRTH MUST BE EARLIER THAN CHILDREN, THEN (CHILDS NAME) WAS BORN'. What am I doing wrong, just want to delete a small part of the notes, maybe I should have done it before I uploaded my tree. I would be very grateful for any tips. Thanks for any help. Marilyn |

Have you checked the year of birth? It may have been corrupted in the upload.......... Reg |

I have had this problem, I think you have to start from the bottom and work upwards. I too deleted all my living relatives but I know it was quite tedious. Jennifer |

Thanks for replying Jennifer. I dont want to delete the person from my tree, just a part of the notes in the details section at the bottom. This person is deceased anyway but just wanted to take something out of his notes about someone who is alive. (The person who is mentioned on notes is not on my tree). Thanks for trying anyway, both of you. Marilyn |

Whilst on this theme, I would like advice please on deleting relatives. Likewise, I imported an updated tree from FTM, and wanted to delete living relatives, but found it so complicated, I kept getting 'cannot delete person with multiple relatives' In the end I deleted the whole tree again, and will wait until I've got more patience or ideas! H. Thats what I got when I tried deleting relatives a while ago, that is why I uploaded my tree again. Before you do it privatise your tree though whilst in Family Tree Maker and it will just give the name, no other details. I have seen 'living relative' on peoples trees though, not sure how they do this. Any advice on this too would be appreciated. Thanks Marilyn On my problem going to alter it on Family Tree Maker and try to upload it yet again!!! |

GR has certain on-screen validation rules, to stop you entering wrong data. So it seems that you can not add a child whose birth date is earlier than its parent. The validation is not applied when you upload a file, otherwise there would be major problems with file rejections. If however, you go to update a record, the validation kicks on when you try to save, and you are obliged to correct any missing or invalid fields. Also you are not allowed to delete a person who has linked dependents. This is to prevent you having unconnected orphan branches as there is no way of connecting them back, on GR. Programs such as FTM will allow you to disconnect branches which are linked to the wrong ancestor, and add them back to the correct one. |
