Hope you have luck with your search, but don't hold your breath!! My husband's distant ancestor was one Alice Nethercott whose 4 children were all baptised as base-born. No sign of any father. This was 1784-1804. No Bastardy Bonds or Settlements can be found! My assumption is that she was being kept by a man who could not marry her for whatever reason. When she died, still with the name Nethercott, she called herself a widow! Wendy

My great grandfather's sister had at least 4, possibly 5, children out of wedlock. In 1901 she is still listed as single, momma is helping look after the kids .................. and no sign of a poppa or poppas! I think a poor cotton weaver couldn't possibly chase up poppa(s) to claim money. Sylvia

You give no indication as to date but fathers (when known) have long had to pay up and therefore their names are known. Court or poor law union records (or both!) may help. Clive

My GGrandmother had a child out of wedlock at 17, just got marriage certificate back, but no fathers name on it as she was baptised in her mothers maiden name, is there any way I can find out who the father was or just leave it at that. Any advice would be much appreciated. Yvonne
