If it was before 1901, you can narrow it to a 10-year span by determining the last UK census on which he appears. Reg |

If before 1901 check the 1901 Canadian census on Automated Genealogy. Also the 1911 Canadian census there. If you think he might have emigrated between the years 1925-1935, there's a list of immigrants to Canada between those years on the Collections Canada site. If he was the right age to have enlisted for WW1 in Canada, check the attestation papers also on the Collections Canada site. |

On the Canadian Archives for those arriving between 1925-35 there is isnt one that matches age and country. On the Ellis Island (travel to america, as some people did before going on to Canada) site there are these guys, all born 1896 +/-2 Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival 1. John Chapman 1923 25 2. John Chapman 1920 26 3. John Chapman 1921 27 4. John Chapman 1922 28 5. John Chapman 1922 28 6. John Chapman 1923 29 7. John Chapman 1923 29 8. John Chapman 1923 29 9. John Chapman 1924 30 10. John Chapman 1924 30 14. John Chapman Liverpool 1923 29 16. John Chapman U 1923 29 You can view the images on www.ellisisland.org You have to sign up but its free to view the images, the images should give you some clue to who the person is. There is a bit that shows you who they are going to live with and who is their contact back home. Findmypast has these John Chapmans moving to Canada between 1905 and 1919 (it only goes up to 1919 at the moment) CHAPMAN John M 1908 Liverpool Canada Montreal VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1908 Liverpool Canada Quebec VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1909 Liverpool Canada Montreal VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1909 Liverpool Canada Montreal VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1910 Liverpool Canada Montreal VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1911 Liverpool Canada Quebec VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1911 Liverpool Canada Quebec VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John 21 M 1913 Southampton Canada Quebec VIEW VIEW CHAPMAN John M 1919 Southampton Canada Halifax VIEW VIEW If he went to Canada then he might have joined the army for the WW1. Have a look at this website, there is one who has his mother Sarah as a next of kin http://www*collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/cef/001042-100.01-e.html Hope thats of some help Mhairi |
