Ages were rounded down in the 1841 census so I wouldn't take any notice of that one. You could marry younger in those days but not sure exactly what dates apply - someone else may know. Janice

Right i think im going slightly mad with this. I have been trying to find the parents of one of my 4x greatgrandmothers Jane Clark (Moor) born 1810 in Broughton, nr Skipton, yorkshire. I have found her baptism on the IGI as 8/09/1810 and her parents are Henry Moor and Mary Gott she also had 2 sisters, Elizabeth 1807 and Mary 1809. Now thought that was pretty easy! so i began looking in the census to see if Henry and Mary are still around, and Yes they are ,all nice and correct and matching up, but Henry gives his year of birth as 1796 on the 1841 census and then it settles to 1793 in 51 and 61 census I have now realised he was too young to have had a child in 1807 he would have been only 14? What would you think is it not the right Henry and Mary? and should i discount them? everthing else matches really well. Dont know what to think now! thanks Sharmala

Two possibilities. 1.Obviously, they could be the wrong ones. Or 2.As so often happens, they forget when they were born or only ever knew an approximate anyway. The people filling the census may have been guessing even. I would say to confirm or rule them out you're looking at local records for them to find out when he was born/baptised and so on. That said... although 14 is young to have kids, it's not necessarily *too* young. Look at kids these days as young as 12. I think there were some who were like that in days gone by too... maybe not as extreme as 12, but if he had to grow up and be the man of the house or whatever at a young age you just don't know.

It's me again (Big groans from Sharm). In most areas the age on the 1841 is rounded down to the nearest 5 once they are 15. That is both a 15 year old and a 19 year old are shown as the same age - 15. Th elegal age for marriage was 14 for a boy (and 12 for a girl). Ihave seen some census returns with the right age shown all th etime and one only when the rounding was to the nearest 10. Clive

Hi Thanks for that i am having doubts about it, but like you say it is possible to have children at 14 but everthing seems to match up though unless the henry i found is perhaps janes elder brother? looks like a trip to the records office then just to make sure. Thankyou Sharmala.

hi Say if this is right about Henry being 14 when he married Mary she must have been 29 thats taking toyboyism to the extreme!! Sharmala.
