I'm not very good on a computer so hope someone can tell me how I can save the web site addresses of tips various people put on here, I think it was referred to as bookmarking!!!

To bookmark a thread where there is a website mentioned that you want to be able to find again, just click on 'add reply' at the top of the thread and type in any sort of reply. You can just add one word or you can add a sentence, i.e. 'just bookmarking this thread'. Then the next time you want to find the website, you can go to the 'tips board (if that's where it was) and click on 'your threads only' and any threads you have added to will come up. An easier way is to go to the website that someone mentions and then add it to your favourites. Kath. x

Lin, when you have a web page showing you want to save at the top of the page is 'favourites' left click on that and you should get a drop down menu click add to favourites. next time you want to view it just click on favourites and it should give you a drop down menu of all the pages you have saved.

Hi Kathleen and Linda, Thanks for trying to help me but I've tried both your remedies but can't manage to save the websites I'm interested in. When I click nothing happens. I tried highlighting them first but still nothing. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong please.

Hi Lynn If I understand you correctly, you need to highlight the web address then right click on it and then select copy. Minimise GR then click on your webb address bar, right click and select paste. Then click go, that should take you to the web page. Don't forget to remove the brackets. Tricia

Hi Tricia, I've just been trying out your method, when I right click I don't always get the option to copy, on the odd occassion that option comes up I click copy but when I try to install it in the place at the top all that goes in there is genes address. Do you know what I'm doing wrong please.

I only 'bookmark' the sites that I visit regularly such as GR, Ancestry, Findmypast etc. Any useful website addys that get mentioned on this site on threads that I think might prove useful at a later date I save on an Excel spreadsheet but you could save them in a Word document or something similar. I just highlight the addy then copy and paste into my spreadsheet (or Word document) usually adding a comment as to why the site could be useful. When I need to use one then I copy and paste from my spreadsheet (or Word document) straight into the space (sorry forget what it is called) where the website addy usually appears. Maureen

That sounds easy when you say it quick Glitter. Trouble is what you can do is double dutch to me. I often wonder how you people manage to look things up so quickly, when I need to go to ancestry I close everything else down first and then the same when I want to get back to Genes, it takes me ages.

Speed on lookups is only because people have more than one browser window open. On my old computer I click on File at top left of my screen and then select New Browser Window. That way you can use a different browser window for GR and another for Ancestry or whatever you like. Each browser window can be resized if you want to view two at once or you can minimise the one that you are not working on and then maximise it when you do want it. I quite often have three or more browser windows in use at the same time. Maureen

Thanks Glitter, I think it's a little beyond me at the moment. I really need someone to show me, next time my nephew is nearby I'll get him to give me a lesson.

George, I don't have a 'Favourites' tab at top of page, I do have one marked 'Bookmarks' though.

Hi Lin Are you using firefox? Click on Bookmarks then click 'add this site'. You will want to make some new folders - eg genealogy and fun and whatever else you're interested in. You must actually be at the site obviously. From say the tips boards you read a message, and you see a link (address) you can highlight it, click edit up top left then 'copy'. Get your cursor in your search bar, go to edit and click paste. Remove any brackets then enter and you should get to the site and you can then bookmark it. HTH Bernie
