The marriage certificate info for my maternal grandfather to Sarah Anne Greenslade shows 'by licence' 14 Oct 1871, Parish Church of St Pauls, Clifton, Bristol. Witnesses George Alfred Miller, Joseph Walter Hickman. Both groom and bride 'of full age' (unusual by that date). His profession 'seed crusher' (actually a commercial traveller), residence Bridgewater, Somerset. Her profession blank. Her address S. Pauls, Clifton. Her father's name William Greenslade, Merchant's clerk. I have been unable to find a William Greenslade who was a clerk. Death register for Sarah Anne ref: Q3 1879, Gloucester, Vol 6a, Page 163. So I do not know how old she was and do not know where she came from. Any suggestions how I might find out more please? Clive

My Nan didn't actually invent a father, she gave the details of her Grandfather, just a thought

Clive Her death cert will give an age - hopefully an accurate one! Mine didnt so much invent fathers (although some did) as invent their father's occupation. I have Master Jeweller for a pawn broker's clerk, and Engineer for a labourer, brewer for a man who ran a small corner shop and presumably brewed a barrel of beer in the backyard, and Transport Manager for a man who had a horse and cart! I also know that some of the illegitimate ones gave details of their grandfathers (who brought them up). OC

Good point Reggie, had not thought of that. She was actually a step-mother to my mother. My grandfather married twice (his housekeeper the seond time round and about 2 years after his first wife died) so I had not bothered to get the death certificate. Clive

Reggie, she married George William (Henry) Bailey. There was someting odd going on with people changing names by deed poll. He was actually NOT William at the time of his marriage although that was the name he used! Clive

I can find a Sarah Ann Greenslade in Nethereye as a 4 year old orphan(?) in the poor house in 1851. Thereafter a blank. On my wife's side we can track one person throughout her life and we can prove she invented a father. Have I missed an option of miss-spelling Greenslade or something please? Clive

Clive - that 1851 entry in Nethereye - there are other Greenslades there - Elizabeth aged 39, Mary Ann aged 7 and Charlotte aged 1. So I would imagine that Sarah is the daughter of Elizabeth who was widowed and ended up in the workhouse with her children.

There is this birth: Births Mar 1848 GREENSLADE Sarah Ann Williton 10 509 Williton is in Somerset, so that fits in more with her marriage. And I think rules out the one in Nethereye - as that is in Devon. 1851 England Census about Sarah Ann Greenslate Name: Sarah Ann Greenslate Age: 3 Estimated birth year: abt 1848 Relation: Granddaughter Gender: Female Where born: Minehead, Somerset, England Civil parish: Minehead County/Island: Somerset Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Williton Sub-registration district: Minehead ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 17 Household Members: Name Age John Addicott 40 visitor Fanny Burge 53 Sarah Burge 10 William Burge 56 Elizabeth Ellard 40 visitor Sarah Ann Greenslate 3 Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 1920; Folio: 84; Page: 6; GSU roll: 221075. It might be worth ordering the marriage cert of William Greenslade and Elizabeth Burge - if his occupation is anything like Clerk then you may be onto the right one! Plus then you'll get his dads name etc.

Clive Report 1 Jun 2007 18:07

Brilliant Alexandra and everyone else who helped. An Elizabeth Burge married a Wiliam Greenslade Dec quarter 1846. An Elizabeth Greenslade died Jun quarter 1848 (Sarah Ann was born Mar quarter 1848). A William Greenslade died Dec quarter 1850. All in the Williton district. I have no idea whether the William above is Sarah Ann's father nor whether he died in 1850 or lived on and was a merchant's clerk. Death certificates may answer those questions!! a grateful Clive
