Lots of my farmers also had pubs - a victualler would indicate he provided food aswell. It was a sensible diversification - the produce from the farm would be sold in the pub. |

One of my ancestors in the census is noted down as a licensed victular farmer. Can anyone please tell me what this is. Many Thanks |

Suspect he had 2 roles - one as publican and the other as a farmer. Many rural inns had pieces of land attached, probably 2 or 3 fields. Bear in mind that innkeeper alone in a rural location wasn't enough to earn a living - often reliant on visitng tradesmen etc in need of lodgings, or a possible coach stop.Wife often saw to the pub and husband the land.
