Thanks everyone I now dont think it was the royal irish lancers, the more probable thing after your suggestions was the Royal Lancashire Militia (volunteers).I didnt know anything about them glad i asked now!. Sharmala |

If you google Chelsea Pensioner museum you will get some info. An 'out pensioner' was someone who did not live in the home at Chelsea which was for unmarried men. |

Militia in Victorian times (and slightly earlier) was a mob of volunteers with just a few regular soldiers. My gt uncle was in a Yorks Militia and which was used to crush the revolting peasants who objected to the mills being built which put good honest men out of work. Functioned a bit like the TA of today. Clive |

Sergt ???? Staff 5th R.L.Malitia Out pens Chelsea. So I read it as possibly a Staff Sergeant of some description, Regiment 5th possibly Royal Lancers?? Military. Chelsea out pensioner. This ties in with his wife being a pensioner's wife. Chris |

Hello Could someone please help in reading the occ of James McCullough. It looks like it was something to do with the army as they are in the Barracks area of Burnley, and his wife is a Pensioners wife, the word Chelsea is at the end of his occ. RG9 3072 19 Page 31. Thankyou. |
