	It's not a stupid question. In fact it can be quite tricky! See what clues you can get from family memories and try finding marriages in the free BMD for those still single in the 1901 census. There is a free historical directories site on line if you had family in trade. Try googling every name you have! If the name is uncommon it may be worth your while buying BMDs and taking a chance if the location seems correct. I think there are some electoral rolls available for previous years, but I haven't tried that.

	Your question is a bit vague. BMD data can be very useful. Post Office or trade directories can help. Archived newspapers, if you live in the right area, visits to the records office for electoral rolls and some school records. Clive
