Thanks for your replies. I think the initial of the Christian name is probably H, not M - Harry Bertram. I shall have to check the casualty records. I found the information extremely interesting. The names on our trees become real people to us as we piece together their life histories. |

The wooden cross was first erected over the grave, and then later it was replaced by the CWGC stone. These photo's were sent to the family of the deceased on a card giving details of the cemetery etc - we have one for a relative died of wounds in November 1916. Incidentally we have also been to the cemetery in France where he lies. Very moving. I would think from what you say that you only have the photograph without the card. Regards Keith |

A contact on Genes has very kindly e-mailed me a photo of a war grave bearing the number K 238. I looks like a WW1 war grave. The name is ? Tufnell. He thinks it is M Tufnell but I'm not sure. I have looked on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission's website, but with no luck. I was wondering if it is possible to do a reverse search - i.e. by knowing the grave number to find who was buried there. We know it is a Tufnell. My contact thought the person was the brother of Mabel Alice Tufnell, who married Ernest Wibberley, but none of her brothers had the initial M. Any help would be appreciated. The photo is of a wooden cross with three metal strips on which the information must be printed, but it can't be read in the photo. |
