If he is in white almost definitely Navy. White socks (and shoes) somewhere fairly formal. No socks and sandals somewhere informal. Clive |

the reason i ask is i have photos of him and family dated and places named. he is in white shorts, shirt and officers hat and wife and kids normal clothes. i dont know what reg or anything |

It sounds to me as if he was enjoying a 'married accompanied' draft. This is one which lasted for two and a half years in where ever for all sorts of reasons. It could be for training purposes - that is where the host country was paying the Uk to send RN staff out to train their own forces. My memory is not that good (here comes HPT saying google) but I think we had troops (and navy and airforce) stationed in Iraq up until about 1950. We had troops in Israel too but the Stern gang made them unwelcome killing soldiers and families. At the time I think for Israel it was called the Palestinian Protectorate. There has been recorded fierce fighting in that region for about 6,000 years. I doubt if we will see any change. Clive |

Nigeria didn't gain its independence from the United Kingdom untill 1960. Iraq was invaded by the United Kingdom in 1941, for fear that the government of Rashid Ali might cut oil supplies to Western nations, and because of his strong ideological leanings to Nazi Germany. A military occupation followed the restoration of the Hashemite monarchy, and the occupation ended on October 26, 1947.The rulers during the occupation and the remainder of the Hashemite monarchy were Nuri al-Said, the autocratic prime minister, who also ruled from 1930-1932, and 'Abd al-Ilah, an advisor to the king Faisal II. The reinstated Hashemite monarchy lasted until 1958, when it was overthrown by a coup d'etat of the Iraqi Army, known as the 14 July Revolution. |

my dads uncle was in the royal navy (we think from looking at hat). in 1949 he was out in nigeria and in 1953 he was in iraq. were there wars going on at this point? if not why would the navy be stationed out there? his wife and child were also with him. |
