That was well found! Thanet College is still there too. It is a bit odd that John Bullock Cumming (with his American relatives shown in 1881) do not show up in American census returns. I also find it hard to find any proof of Minnie being a grand-neice married to a Partridge. Why am I bothered? He is not part of my direct line!!!!! On the other hand family lore has it that one of his (and my aunt's) descendents is living not far from me in Hampshire. Clive

There's a John E Cumming (Cunning on the index) aged 9 born London attending Thanet College in Margate.

In 1881 John Bullock Cumming is in London with an American wife plus in-laws. Not a lot of help in find great grandson in 1901. Clive

Well found In 1901 the census was on Sunday 31 March and Easter 7 April. Given the amount of money which appears to be around the Bovis house I suspect the missing boy is at boarding school. Thirty years ealier and I would suggest Belgium but in 1901 I am not sure. As already suggested he might be on holiday somewhere calling himself Garret-Partridge-Cumming. Clive Clive

I've been having trouble finding either of them in 1901 Clive. If I were you, I wouldn't be able to resist buying that birth certificate for Edward Partridge that I put the details for above. It might possibly show John Cumming as dad. Angela Just had a thought, Clive (I do occasionally!) Maybe they were visiting relatives in America at the time of the 1901 census?

So what happened to Minnie Think-of-a-name-for-today and her son who appearently married in 1923 as Edward John Cumming? I have not found them on the 1901 census. Others on this thread have worked wonder for which many thanks. Clive

The 1891 found above shows a Minnie Prrtridge....... could she be the 'Minnie Garrett' on the marriage reg'n? The combination of names seems too much of a coincidence not to be relevant......... Reg

You could well be right about ignoring Middlesbrough. Next child was born Bexley Heath, my guess is that as a sanitary inspector (local government employee therefore) he moved for promotion. My guess is that my aunt was a nurse - family lore says she was a QA Army nurse during WW I. On the wedding cert my aunt's father is shown as decd but John Bullock is shown as general merchant. Whoops really boobed there. The wedding was on 12 th February 1923 in St Barnabas Church Pimlico. His address quoted as 16 Grane Road, Middlesbrough. Wife's family lived in Crescent Road, Middlesbrough. First child of marriage born Grange Road.. I can not read my Aunt's address. Clive
